In fact, I regard Ursula K le Guin as an exceptionally literary writer. And Philip K. Dick (who never won the Nebula but was nominated for it 5 separate times) is in my opinion one of the most literary writers America has ever produced. Ever.

I don't at all agree with the current academia trend of making a distinction between plot driven and character driven. I regard this as a false dilemma -- and a very serious one at that. It needlessly implies that fiction be either/or -- which in actuality it need NOT. Should not. Fiction without plot -- no matter how detailed the depiction o character -- is neither literary fiction nor commercial fiction but journalistic fiction -- which is to say, bad fiction. Fiction without depth of character -- no matter how driving the action or passionate the romance -- is melodramatic fiction, which is also to say, bad fiction.
