Maybe a little bit too absurdist overall for my particular taste, too obscurantist, by his own admission (about Gravity's Rainbow: "I don't have any idea what I was talking about in some of those passages"), but I do regard Thomas Pynchon as a first-rate stylist, and I've long said that V is absolutely the best first-novel ever written in American literature. I liked Vineland too. The Crying of Lot 49 I thought was okay -- by turns fascinating and boring. Mason Dixon and Inherent Vice I did not care for.
